The Incomer – A Quirky Tale of Island Life and Belonging
What happens when an outsider arrives in a world that has happily existed without one?
Set on a remote Scottish island, The Incomer tells the wonderfully eccentric story of siblings Isla and Sandy, whose unconventional existence revolves around hunting seabirds, conversing with mythical creatures and fiercely protecting their isolated home from unwanted visitors.
Their carefully ordered world is thrown into disarray by the arrival of Daniel, played by Domhnall Gleeson, a lonely and socially awkward council worker tasked with persuading the siblings to abandon their island and relocate to the mainland.
But what begins as an uncomfortable encounter between two very different worlds develops into something altogether more surprising, as questions of belonging, loneliness and the need for human connection come to the fore.
Inspired by his family’s Orcadian heritage, director Louis Paxton creates a distinctive and imaginative portrait of island life, blending offbeat humour, Scottish folklore and moments of genuine tenderness.
At once funny, touching and quietly thought-provoking, The Incomer reminds us that even in the most remote corners of the world, human connection can be found in the most unexpected places.
