An Illuminating Tour of St Mary’s Church

Putting the Kirk in Kirkby Lonsdale: the Minster of the Lune?

The early story of Kirkby Lonsdale’s Parish Church is lost in the mists of time, but one thing is certain: when Norse Settlers arrived in the 10th century, there was already a church on the site. The earliest fragments of evidence may be Saxon, and stones from earlier buildings will certainly have been reused when today’s church started rising on the site from the early 1100s onwards.

When you enter the church, you can’t fail to notice the impressive, decorated piers at the west end, or the strikingly beautiful window at the East End, but join Tess Pike, Blue Badge Tourist Guide, on a guided tour of St Mary’s to see the church in a new light.
