Deepfakes: Just how worried should we be?

Deepfake technology can create convincing fake content of anyone, enabling political disinformation, financial fraud, and sexual digital forgeries. In this talk, Dr Sophie Nightingale explores her research into the realism and trustworthiness of AI-generated faces. Sophie, a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Lancaster University, studies how technology intersects with human cognition and behaviour.

Deepfake technology can be used to create fake content of anyone doing anything. Although this technology can have positive uses, it inevitably invites nefarious exploitation with harms including political disinformation, financial fraud and the creation of sexual digital forgeries.

In this talk, Dr Sophie Nightingale will discuss her research into the realism and trustworthiness of faces generated using deepfake models.

Sophie is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Lancaster University. Her research interests mainly focus on the intersection of technology with human cognition and behaviour, particularly in security, legal, and forensic contexts.
